Overview
The design and information architecture of the website needs to have clearly defined goals and features. This helps design the overall look and appeal to the visitors of the page. It also has to represent the company by using the correct design principles that enbody their philosophy. In conversation with Epic Maui Camping, five key focus areas and functions were identified. Other aspects that were taken into consideration are outlined in the competitor analysis and comparison section.
Primary focus of the website is booking and ensuring that booking is the first action of the visiting customer. Putting the
option for booking in the middle of the page in order to catch the
user is therefore a priority.
The secondary priority is to ensure a good and direct channel of communication with Epic Maui Camping so every customer is
accommodated. If package deals advertised fall short, then
contacting Epic Maui Camping to tailor a solution is extremely
important. Epic Maui Camping is all about offering first rate service
Featured customer reviews is an important aspect of selling and
promoting Epic Maui Camping. Good reviews and praise of the
epic camping experience is essential for visitors to the site in
order to further communicate and describe the adventures available from people who have first hand knowledge and whom have tried travel with Epic Maui Camping.
Even with positive and detailed reviews and feedback from customers, a picture is worth a thousand words. The photobook
will showcase amazing photographs from the incredible nature scenes you can visit and experience with Epic Maui Camping.
The Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section is cruicial. Many
people may be unfamiliar with the types of excursions Epic Maui
Camping have to offer. The FAQ can answer the most common
questions visitors have. This eleviates work for Epic Maui
Camping by decreasing customer contact traffic, but also
answers questions potential customer have who could be
dissuaded by the need for contact about simple questions.
Competitor Analysis
Several companies and booking sites that offer camping options were looked at. This to help determine how Epic Maui Camping can differentiate, but also to draw inspiration on key features that are necessary to implement in the final solution.
A commonality across these sites was the difficulty in navigating the site to find what you're looking for. The number of options are overwhelming. On some of the sites the option for a camping trip was difficult to locate unless you searched for it via Google rather than through the company website. The amount of information overload that meets the customers can be daunting and taxing on a user.
One site found was close to what Epic Maui Camping imagined their site should look. The big difference was the much simpler design, with a more specific focus on the product they're selling. There was a lot of white space, narrowing the visitor's focus on what is important on the page. The user's choices are limited, but relevant for the goal of the user - Where,
when and what type of accommodations.
USER RESEARCH
User research is part of the foundation for creating and designing solutions. Clear definitions of what the solution should look like and entail were established while talking with Epic Maui Camping. User research is important to justify design decisions, but user research and personas are also important to help steer the design and functionality in the correct direction so that the right demographic is reached.
Prototyping and wireframing
I went through some low fidelity wireframe drawings that were shown to the
customer. Through dialogue with Epic Maui Camping, we settled on a design they liked.
The initial feedback and thoughts received from Epic Maui Camping allowed me to move onto higher fidelity prototypes in Figma. Here a video showing an interactive prototype of the webpage with the primary functionality, pages and the overall look.
Visual Design
The logo was supplied by Epic Maui Camping. This gave the basis for the visual design and the generation of the styleguide - colours and typography. using the primary colours in the logo, I generated a colour scale that can be used throughout the design.
Project evaluation
Due to the Corona Pandemic and the impact on travel and business, Epic Maui Camping have decided to pause the project development. The project therefore remains incomplete. This project case study includes all the material and work done so far.
All materials have been handed over to Epic Maui Camping. Several lessons were learned during this project. Keeping the customer in the loop is beneficial and extremely important in order to effectivise the progress.
Keeping the customers in the loop also improves on the iterative aspect of the project - more frequent feedback loops/input allows for smaller, but faster changes to the design minimizing down time and improving the end result.
